Jewellery manufacturing history dates back to the Mughal era, when the city became a center for gemstone cutting, polishing, and designing under royal patronage. The maharajas during establishment of the city of Jaipur fostered the craft by inviting skilled artisans from across India and beyond, transforming the city into a flourishing hub for jewellery arts

Jaipur is considered one of the world’s largest centers for cutting and polishing precious and semi-precious stones, including emeralds, rubies, and sapphires. The Johari Bazaar, the historic jewellery market, stands as a testament to this thriving trade.

In 1965, Jaipur’s jewellery industry witnessed significant growth and transformation. The establishment of the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (a semi-government body) marked a milestone, with its first chairperson hailing from Jaipur, reflecting the city’s prominence in the field.
The city’s traditional Joharis (jewellers) began training and mentoring a new generation of artisans, ensuring the preservation and evolution of Jaipur’s renowned craftsmanship. This period also saw an influx of foreign jewellery buyers, leading to a surge in international trade and creating a vibrant market for Jaipur’s exquisite designs.
